Breckland

124,000 people live in Breckland. Breckland is home to five market towns, Attleborough, Dereham, Swaffham, Thetford and Watton. All have their own personality and distinct character, with varied attractions on offer to visitors of all ages. Over 90% of the businesses in Breckland are small to medium sized, and therefore play an important role in the economic development of the district.

Thetford is the industrial engine of the district and home to some of our key employers such as Baxter Healthcare and Jeyes. The town has a higher than average amount of manufacturing employment and also exhibits strengths and growth in clusters surrounding the Advanced Engineering sector. Thetford town has attracted over £10 million in regeneration funds.

Breckland Council, with their Partners Shaping Norfolks Future and Norfolk County Council, are leading REV ACTIVE, a major project which supports regeneration and economic growth predominantly along the A11 as part of the REV Programme (www.reveast.com).

REV ACTIVE seeks to identify small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) that have the greatest potential to improve their resource efficiency and reduce energy consumption, working with them to proactively realise this potential and the associated business benefits in doing so, for example reduced costs, enhanced reputations and competitive advantage. The project focuses upon Norwich, Thetford and the A11 corridor that links them.  Launched in October, the project has already supported over 30 businesses, helping them to identify over £100,000 in cost savings.

REV ACTIVE is a 3-year programme of free, confidential and impartial advice for small and medium sized enterprises, including on-site opportunities, reviews and reports by experts and access to grants to reduce costs and carbon footprints and boost competitiveness.

REV ACTIVE also offers further targeted ‘hands on’ support and consultancy to help create or re-engineer processes and products to make bigger or longer term savings.

A range of value added services are available to the wider business community, focusing on self help and assistance around ‘quick wins’ which focus on reducing the use of resources -  water, energy and materials - to deliver significant financial savings.

Mark Kiddle-Morris, Executive Member for Economic and Commercial Services, Breckland Council said,

“There is increasing pressure from central government for businesses to reduce carbon emissions and REV ACTIVE will provide a fantastic opportunity for companies to achieve savings whilst acting in a greener way”.

Warren Services, based in Thetford took advantage of REV ACTIVE’s support to identify potential annual savings of over £20,000.   Warren Services have already been proactive in cutting costs by embedding resource efficiency within the business but with help from REV ACTIVE, they are now examining a range of opportunities, including power factor correction, voltage optimisation and LED lighting, which could reduce their annual carbon emissions by 50 tonnes.

Several other Norfolk-based companies are also enjoying significant savings as a result of signing up to REV ACTIVE’s free support;

  • Colchester Print are saving £7,238 a year after reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill by 70% and generating a new income stream through paper recycling.
  • Kitchen furniture makers Brian Turner Furniture are saving £6,000 a year in waste disposal costs by incorporating a biomass wood heating system fuelled by the waste sawdust, shavings and off cuts.
  • KLM Engineering Ltd provides maintenance and training on commercial aircraft.  KLM Engineering Ltd are making savings of over £19,000 per year in electricity costs through the installation of LED lighting in all their highbay lighting.
