DRIVING TEAMS BATTLE IT OUT FOR GREEN HONOURS
16 Mar 2010
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service came top of the board in an EcoDriving competition last week.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue beat over 40 business teams to win an EcoDriving competition at The Forum, Norwich.
EcoDriving principles, which include creating a smooth flow in your driving, anticipating traffic to reduce the number of times you stop and start and avoiding unnecessary gear changes, helped the Fire Service win first place and learn first hand how to cut their fuel costs by up to 20% and reduce their carbon emissions.
The Fire Service won a track day at Lotus, which will include a demonstration in the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel demonstrator car, practical driver training on the track, a factory tour around Lotus and lunch overlooking the track. Norfolk Fire and Rescue along with runners up Lotus and May Gurney have each won Eco Safe Driver training for up to 15 employees provided by Norfolk County Council's Driver and Rider Development Team.
Lotus and May Gurney, which took 2nd and 3rd place, were also organisers of the competition, alongside partners Archant Print, Biosphere Expeditions, Norfolk County Council and the UEA. The group is part of Shaping Norfolk's Future's Sustainable Prosperity Group, one aim of which is to encourage businesses to reduce their carbon emissions.
Fiona Atkins, Sustainable Prosperity Officer for Shaping Norfolk's Future said:
"Norfolk Fire and Rescue did incredibly well against tough competition. Norfolk County Council provides Eco Safe Driver Training, which will not only advise you how to drive more safely but also how to adopt a driving style, which reduces your fuel consumption. We would encourage everyone, especially those that operate a transport fleet, to learn how to drive in an environmentally friendly way to save fuel and reduce your emissions."
